In this book I tell the story o this research, how it is illuminating the mechanisms that enable sel- control, and how these mechanisms can be harnessed constructively in everyday lie. The Marshmallow Test and the experiments that have ol- lowed over the last ty years have helped stimulate a remark- abl e wave o resea rch on sel- control, with a veold increase in the number o scien tic publi cations just w ithin the rst decade o this century. Modicatio n, and it can be enhanced through s pecic cognitive strategies t hat have now been identi ed. Most important, and exciting or its educational and child- rearing implications, it is a skill open to In studies initiated hal a century ago, and still ongoing today, we’ ve shown that t his skill set is visible and measurabl e early in lie and has prooun d long- term consequences or people’s welare and mental and physical health over the lie span. The basic idea that drove my work and motivated me to write this book was my belie, and the ndings, that the ability to delay immediate gratication or the sake o uture conse- que nces is a n acquirab le cognitive skill. My own impa- tience, and t he discovery that sel- control str ategies can be learned, has kept me studying t hose strategies or a liet ime. At dinners with r iends, to my embarrassment my pla te is oten t he rst to be clean, when others are ar rom done. I have been known to call my st uden ts in the middle o the night to ask how the latest data analysis was going, though it began only that evening. And my children can testiy, sel- control does not come naturally to me.
